Parashat Ekeb: What does G-d want from me??

From the Divre Torah of Rabbi Yaakob Savdie, Brooklyn NY:

If you’ve ever wondered to yourself, “What exactly does G-d want from me??” you’re in luck! The answer is found in this week’s parasha. Moshe Rabenu tells Am Yisrael: "And now Yisrael what does Hashem your G-d ask of you, just to fear him " (Debarim 10:12). All G-d wants is for us to live our lives with constant yirat shamayim (fear of heaven).
Wait a minute! That’s tremendously difficult isn’t it?

The Gemara asks this very question: "Is Yirat Shamayim something so insignificant?" (Berachot 32b). How could Moshe Rabenu deem yirat shamayim to be a small matter?! It is a lifetime challenge! When a person sins he looks around to make sure nobody’s watching. It is challenging to recall that Hashem is ALWAYS watching (there is an amazing story about that- if your interested email me). The Gemara responds: "Yes, for Moshe Rabenu it is something very small".

The Gemara's response is difficult. Moshe Rabenu knew he was speaking to the entire Am Yisrael. A leader must teach his people on their level (not his own). Why would Moshe diminish the challenge of living with fear of G-d in the people's eyes?

I'd like to share an enlightening answer based on the shocking words of the Rambam in Hilchot Teshuba (5:2):
"Every person can ba a saddik like Moshe Rabenu"
Wow! Is that really possible?
Well this clearly does not refer to level of prophecy, for there has never been or will be a prophet on the level of Moshe Rabenu.
It refers to reaching one's potential. Everybody can reach their full potential just like Moshe Rabenu did.
Where did the Rambam learn this from?
We can explain that it stems from our passuk. Moshe Rabenu (our teacher!) was teaching Am Yisrael that each of them can reach a level where fearing Hashem will then be considered something insignificant.
That is all G-d wants from you. It may be difficult but it is possible.

Remember! He's watching...
Yaakob Savdie
